If you graduated from Jonesboro High School in 1968 or 1967, then you are in the right place. The classes of '67 and '68 had a Super reunion October 10 and 11, HOMECOMING weekend in Jonesboro. This was an event to remember.

This from Lise Cater..."

Great meeting last night and good to see everybody.. I couldn’t hear a lot of what was being said at the other end of the table, but from what I could gather, the ones of us who were there think it would be fun to have a 45^th next summer. . I think we have enough time to put something together that would be fun and agreeable to everyone who puts it all together. . being an “odd” year reunion, I like the idea of pitching it to as many class members first as we can reach.. I’ll put an email together for John Coleman, who has said he will be glad to help with electronic communication.. Steve Carson at JHS will keep things updated for us on the JHS reunion web site . .

Also, if you have worked on any reunions or attended any then you know we were missing someone very important last night. . Steve Grilletta .. he is has oral cancer that has spread and has been receiving treatments – chemo and a tumor growth inhibitor- through the spring and this summer .. please keep he and Michelle in your thoughts and prayers.

HOW THE “HURRICANE” GOT ITS NAME

Until the last football season the J.H.S. gridiron team had no name, and since all other teams had adopted emblems and etc, it gave us some worry as to just what we ought to name the team. Looking through the list of usual names and emblems, we found that about all of the suitable ones were already in use among the various Arkansas teams. That idea was abandoned, for there were Tigers, Bears, Greyhounds, Bull Dogs, Wild Cats, and every other kind of vicious names on the calendar.

With the first edition of the High Times this perplexing problem was unexpectedly solved in a rather novel manner. Bernice Montague, a loyal booster of J.H.S., was asked to write up a prospective view of the foot-ball team for 1924, and in so doing, a name for the team was coined.

The High School colors being Gold and Black, the team was referred to as the “Golden Hurricane.” This name became a catch phrase and stuck. Fans soon began calling the team the “Golden Hurricane” and
the newspapers liked the name well enough to use it.
Other Arkansas school papers began using the name
In writing up games played against J.H.S., and so it
became universally known among Arkansas teams as
the “Golden Hurricane.” :

We feel sure that a better name could hardly have been selected. If any team entertained any doubts as to what was meant by the J.H.S. team’s name, they were dispelled long since, for where ever the team played, it swept the field like a young hurricane. The men that made up the team of 1924 played the best season of their career. High School’s football schedule was made with some of the strongest and oldest teams in this section of the state. Three games were played with Memphis teams, two of which were won by J.H.S.

The enthusiastic predictions made at the opening of the season for the “Golden Hurricane” were fully lived up to. The team’s success was marked from the start. Another year of football success is expected by the team of 1925
